Global Education

Global Education is learning about global interdependence and the interrelations between the various world problems – an understanding of the social, economic and political impacts between people. Students gain a better understanding of how the world works - economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically, and environmentally.

Global Education emphasizes the interdependence of human society and our natural world, developing a greater understanding oneself, while appreciating cultural diversity, affirming social justice and human rights, as well as building a peaceful and sustainable future. Students become more aware of the larger world in which they live, and they acquire an understanding of their responsible role as a world citizen.

Global Education promotes positive values and assists students to take responsibility for their actions and to see themselves as global citizens who can contribute to a more peaceful, just and sustainable world. Global Education promotes equity and excellence, development of successful learners, confident and creative individuals, active and informed citizens.

Global Education develops global citizens through promotion of open mindedness, a wish to learn, and a willingness to take action for positive change, while respecting and valuing diversity; thus enabling students and everyone to participate in shaping a better shared future for the world.

Global Education inspires responsible action. Action may be just personal, or as a localized community action, or as part of a global community work. There are many types of groups with which people can join together to pursue shared interests and take action for change. These include local-based groups, indigenous groups, labor unions, cooperatives, charitable and faith-based organizations, professional associations, independent research institutes, and the not-for-profit organizations.

The skills developed in Global Education are:
  1. Critical thinking and creative problem-solving
  2. Better informed thinking and discernment
  3. Intercultural understanding
  4. World Values and ethical action

Being a Global Citizen

A Global Citizen realizes an inter-connection to all others around the world, including the natural environment. Consequentially, the Global Citizen seeks to learn about the interconnected global issues, and also seeks to correct social injustice and narrow-minded thinking, as well as build peace and a sustainable world. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and the natural ecology increasingly vulnerable, we must become better aware of how our actions affect all lives around the world, and we need to make intelligent Goals and Plans for a sustainable and ethical world.

This awareness of interdependency has helped create the UN Millennium Development Goals, and there has been further achievement towards these goals since its agreement. The world has halved extreme poverty, improved access to safe drinking water, and furthered gender parity in primary schools. However there is still more to be done. The world's resources are being stretched to the limit, causing tensions within and between countries. Resolving conflict constructively requires a commitment to building peace and reconciling differences. It requires understanding of global issues, high-level communication skills, awareness of cultural differences, patience and a willingness to share resources equitably.
